Hostinger downsides: honest review

Short answer: The biggest downside of Hostinger is the renewal price. The low price only covers your first term: Premium is $1.99/month on 48 months but renews at $10.99/month, and Unlimited is $2.79/month but renews at $16.99/month (hostinger.com, checked November 7, 2026). The other real cons: you pay the whole term upfront, support is live chat only (no phone), it uses its own hPanel instead of cPanel, and Premium only has weekly backups. For most beginners it is still one of the cheapest good hosts, if you know these trade-offs before you buy.

โœ… Still the cheapest 4 years we tested

Hostinger Unlimited: $2.79/mo on 48 months, or $2.51/mo with code LEARN2EARN ($120.53 for 4 years in our cart, before tax). Free domain for the first year, daily backups.

We have used Hostinger for months to build every demo site on this channel: WordPress sites, a WooCommerce store, AI-built sites, a PHP + MySQL app and an n8n server on a VPS. This list is what actually annoyed us or surprised us, not a copy of other review sites.

1. The renewal price is much higher

This is the downside that surprises most people. Hostinger's pricing page shows the renewal price right under the plan: "Renews at $10.99/mo" for Premium, "$16.99/mo" for Unlimited and "$25.99/mo" for Cloud Startup. The cart says it again before you pay.

Hostinger pricing page, November 7, 2026: Premium $1.99/mo, Unlimited $2.79/mo, Cloud Startup $7.99/mo on 48 months, with the total you pay today and the renewal price under each plan

Hostinger's pricing page on November 7, 2026: the first-term price is big, the renewal price is in the small text under each plan.

Over four years, how you buy changes the total a lot. Unlimited bought for 48 months costs $133.92. The same four years bought one year at a time costs $645.12, because you hit the $16.99 renewal three times. We worked out every term in our full Hostinger renewal prices guide, and you can compare it with other hosts in the hosting cost calculator.

How to avoid it: pick the longest term you are sure you will use, and add a reminder one month before the renewal date.

2. You pay the whole term upfront

"$2.79 a month" is not a monthly bill. All plans are paid upfront: on November 7, 2026 the pricing page said "Today you pay $133.92 for 48 months" for Unlimited and "$95.52 for 48 months" for Premium. Our cart with code LEARN2EARN came to $120.53 for Unlimited, before tax.

Hostinger cart, November 7, 2026: Unlimited plan 48 months, $2.51/mo with coupon LEARN2EARN, 48-month period $120.53, coupon savings $13.39, renews after 48 months at $16.99/mo

Our real Hostinger cart: the coupon lowers today's price, and the renewal line stays the same.

If you can't pay four years at once, the 12-month term is the same monthly price during the current sale ($33.48 for Unlimited), but it renews after one year instead of four.

3. No phone support

Hostinger's contact page offers 24/7 live chat with its "customer success agents". We did not find a phone number for support there, and the email addresses listed are for account recovery and press only. The About page says support works in 30+ languages.

In our experience the chat is fine for normal questions (DNS, SSL, email setup). If you want to call someone when your site is down, look at a host with phone support, for example InMotion, and compare the total in Hostinger vs InMotion.

4. hPanel instead of cPanel

Hostinger uses its own control panel, hPanel (the About page says it was born "together with its in-house designed hPanel" in 2011). For beginners this is an advantage: WordPress, email, DNS, backups and the AI builder are all in one clean dashboard. But if you have used cPanel for years, the menus are different, and some cPanel tutorials won't match what you see.

If cPanel is a must for you, ChemiCloud and FastComet use it. See Hostinger vs ChemiCloud and Hostinger vs FastComet for the real 4-year cost of each.

5. Premium only has weekly backups

Premium lists "Free weekly backups". Unlimited lists "Daily backups + easy data restore". For a blog or portfolio, weekly is usually enough. For an online store or a booking site, where orders change every day, losing up to a week of data is a real risk. That is the main reason we run our own projects on Unlimited (every Premium vs Unlimited difference).

6. Shared hosting has limits

Hostinger's plan comparison lists the limits for the entry plan, for example 400,000 files (inodes), 10 databases of up to 3 GB and 2 GB of RAM. Small sites never get close. We did hit one limit in practice: importing a 245 MB WordPress database in phpMyAdmin returned an error 500, so we split the file into parts (how we restored it).

For heavy apps, n8n automations or AI agents, use a VPS instead of shared hosting (VPS vs Cloud hosting).

7. The free domain is free for one year

Plans of 12 months or longer include a domain "free for 1 year". After that it renews at the normal price: $19.99 a year for a .com on November 7, 2026. That is normal in hosting, but budget for it (how the Hostinger free domain works).

8. Some things are not refundable

The 30-day money-back guarantee covers hosting, but Hostinger's refund policy (revised October 29, 2026) lists exceptions, for example domain name renewals, privacy protection and AI credits. A KVM VPS refund also has an extra rule: no other VPS plan refunded in the last 180 days. Details in our Hostinger refund policy guide.

Is Hostinger a trusted company?

Yes. Hostinger is a private company founded in 2004 in Kaunas, Lithuania, and headquartered in Vilnius, according to its About page. It says it serves customers in more than 150 countries. So no, Hostinger is not an Indian company, even though it has a large customer base in India.

Why is Hostinger so cheap?

Three reasons. First, the low price is a first-term discount: the renewal price is the normal price. Second, you pay for up to 48 months upfront, which lowers the monthly number. Third, Hostinger builds its own panel and tools instead of paying for cPanel licenses on its shared plans. None of this makes it a scam, but it explains why the price jumps at renewal.

Is there anything better than Hostinger?

It depends on what you need. In our real-cart tests, Hostinger had the lowest 4-year total for unlimited websites. Other hosts win on specific points:

We have not tested GoDaddy in a real cart, so we won't give you GoDaddy numbers we can't stand behind.

Who should not buy Hostinger?

  • You need phone support.
  • You need cPanel for your workflow or clients.
  • You only want to pay month to month (the 1-month price is $12.99โ€“$27.99).
  • You run a heavy app that needs its own server (pick a VPS).

If you only need 1โ€“3 sites, Hostinger Premium is $1.99/month on 48 months. For everyone else, especially beginners and freelancers who host several small sites, the downsides are manageable. Buy a long term, pick Unlimited if you need daily backups, and use the 30-day refund window to test it.
