Short answer: Yes, you can host a website yourself on your own computer, a Raspberry Pi or a VPS. It is great for learning and testing. For a real business site it is usually a bad deal: your computer must stay on 24/7, your home IP can change, some internet providers block or forbid home servers, and security, SSL and backups become your job. Cheap hosting started at $1.99/month on Hostinger Premium (48 months, November 7, 2026) with a free first-year domain.
๐ The easy way we use
We test sites on our own computer, then put them live on hosting. Hostinger Premium: up to 3 websites, free domain for year one, $95.52 for 48 months. Need more sites? Unlimited is $2.51/mo with code LEARN2EARN.
How can I host my own website?
There are three ways to "host it yourself", from hardest to easiest:
| Option | Cost | Good for | The catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| Your own computer at home | Free software, but electricity and your time | Learning, testing | Must stay on, home IP, router setup, security |
| A VPS (your own server in a data center) | From $6.49/mo (Hostinger KVM 1, 24 months) | Apps, automations, full control | You manage updates and security |
| Shared hosting | From $1.99/mo (Hostinger Premium, 48 months) | Websites | Less control, plan limits |

Hosting a website on your own computer: what it takes
- A web server. For a simple HTML site any small web server works. We run PHP sites locally with PHP's built-in server to test them before we upload.
- A way in from the internet. Either open a port on your router (and deal with a changing home IP), or use a tunnel such as Cloudflare Tunnel, which does not need an open port.
- A domain pointed at that tunnel or IP, and SSL so browsers show the padlock.
- Keep it on 24/7, updated and backed up.
It works, and it teaches you a lot. But if your computer sleeps, restarts for an update or loses power, your site is down.
Why most people should not host a business site at home
- Uptime: a power cut or a Windows update takes the site offline.
- Your internet plan: some home internet providers block incoming web traffic or forbid running servers in their terms.
- Security: you open your home network to the internet.
- Email: sending business email from a home connection usually ends up in spam. Hosting plans include email at your domain.
- Speed: home upload speed is much lower than a data center.
The middle ground: a VPS
If you want "your own server" without the home risks, rent a VPS. It runs in a data center, always on, and you still have full control. We run our n8n automations on a Hostinger KVM 1 and installed n8n with a one-click template (how). For a normal website it is more work than you need (shared hosting vs VPS).

A VPS is "your own server" without running it at home.
How do I host my website for free?
- Your own computer + a free tunnel: free, but only online while your computer is.
- Free subdomain hosting or a free website builder: fine for tests and portfolios (how to publish a website for free).
- Google Sites: free with a Google account, good for simple pages, limited design and features.
The part you can't get free forever is a domain: about $18โ$20 a year for a .com or .org after the first year (the first year is often free with hosting).

With hosting, the domain is free for the first year.
Is Google Sites hosting free?
Yes. Google Sites is free and hosts the site for you on a Google address; you can connect your own domain. It is not built for stores, custom code or advanced SEO.

Our recommendation
- Learning? Host it on your own computer and break things.
- A real site? Hostinger Unlimited for unlimited sites, or Premium for 1โ3.
- Apps and automations? A VPS.
FAQ
Can I host a website on my laptop?
Yes, for testing. For a public site the laptop must stay on and connected all the time.
Can I host a website on a Raspberry Pi?
Yes. It is a popular low-power way to learn self-hosting; the same uptime and security issues apply.
Is self-hosting cheaper than web hosting?
Rarely, once you count electricity, your time and the risk of downtime. Shared hosting from about $2 a month is hard to beat.
Do I need a static IP to host a website at home?
Not if you use a tunnel or dynamic DNS, but it makes things simpler.
